One
of the best-known and oldest manifestations not just in Dobrinjstina
but also on the island of Krk, is Stipanja - the festivity
of Dobrinj parish protector. It is celebrated on the 3rd of
August, on the celebration of finding the remains of St. Stephen,
the first Christian martyr. Stipanja (eng. St. Stephen's Day)
starts with the Old Slavic concelebrated forenoon mass, continues
with the afternoon folklore at the town square and in the
evening it turns into a folk celebration. This tradition was
not interrupted even during the war years; on 3rd August 1944
the occupying forces entered Dobrinj during the prime of folk
joy and locked several innocent locals in the belfry. In a
horrible explosion in the early morning on the following day,
a 16-year-old accordionist Ivica Brusić, a mežnjar (eng. sacristan)
Josip Variola and Anton Variola were killed. Belfry was almost
completely destroyed and later it was gradually restored.
