STIPANJA

One of the best-known and oldest manifestations not just in Dobrinjstina but also on the island of Krk, is Stipanja - the festivity of Dobrinj parish protector. It is celebrated on the 3rd of August, on the celebration of finding the remains of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Stipanja (eng. St. Stephen's Day) starts with the Old Slavic concelebrated forenoon mass, continues with the afternoon folklore at the town square and in the evening it turns into a folk celebration. This tradition was not interrupted even during the war years; on 3rd August 1944 the occupying forces entered Dobrinj during the prime of folk joy and locked several innocent locals in the belfry. In a horrible explosion in the early morning on the following day, a 16-year-old accordionist Ivica Brusić, a mežnjar (eng. sacristan) Josip Variola and Anton Variola were killed. Belfry was almost completely destroyed and later it was gradually restored.

OTHER CELEBRATIONS...

Almost every inhabited place in Dobrinjstina has its protector, i.e. the patron saint, in relation to whom the local saint's day celebrations, the so called somnji, have emerged: In Polje, on 8th September there is a celebration of Mala Gospoja (feast of the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary); Martinje, the feast of St. Martin, the bishop of Tours, is celebrated in Gostinjac on 11th November, and Gospoja od Zdravja (eng. Our Lady of Health) in Sužan on 21st November; in Klimno, on 23rd November there is a feast of Klimantovo (the festivity of St. Clement, the bishop); Mikuja (the festivity of St. Nicholas) is celebrated on 6th December in Šilo and Klimno, and the feast of zimska Stipanja (the holiday of St. Stephen the Martyr) on 26th December in Dobrinj. The first spring somonj (eng. local saint festivity) is Filipja, the feast of St. Philip and St. James in Soline, and then follows the somonj in Županje, devoted to the Mother of God. Antonja, the festivity of St. Anthony of Padova, is celebrated on 13th June in Kras; on 15th June there is the festivity of Vidova, dedicated to St. Vitus the Martyr, in the small town which bears the Saint's name - Sveti Vid. Ivanja, the festivity of St. John the Baptist is celebrated on 24th June by the inhabitants of Sveti Ivan, and on 29th June there is the feast of Petrova in Gabonjin. From recently, the inhabitants of Hlape have their patron, St. Ana, and the feast of Anina is celebrated on 26th July. Vela Gospoja, the festivity of Virgin Mary's Assumption, is celebrated on 15th August in Rasopasno.
